Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: Claudio Arrau considered the Nocturnes among Chopin's deepest, most searching works, rather than mere descriptive mood paintings, and he plays them that way. The same can be said vis-à-vis Arrau's Impromptus, with brooding textures and cosmic breadth that leave the drawing room behind. --Jed Distler

The CD arrived in perfect condition, and I am really enjoying it. Claudio Arrau is definitely one of the best piano players of Chopin.

I am not going to write a lengthy and erudite piece regarding this CD. As you probably know, the tempo adopted by Arrau is quite a bit slower than you'd normally hear. For me, this is the wrong tempo and therefore I cannot recommend this CD unless this is to be your second version of the nocturnes. If we look beyond the tempo the playing is beautifully done. Lots of atmosphere and sensitivity which bring the music to life. Yet, at this tempo one does not get a feel for the nocturnes as wholes. The ... Read More

This is an absolutely incredible recording of the Chopin Nocturnes. It was my first set of Chopin Nocturnes and is still my most beloved. For most Chopin I prefer other artists: Pollini, Rubinstein, maybe Horowitz, if a Polonaise. But for Nocturnes, it's simple: Arrau.
I am usually the last person to talk in subjective terms--I always want an objective explanation--but I feel that nobody had ever connected with these pieces like Arrau. The opus 9 Nocturnes are slow, moving, and stupendous. ... Read More

I've bought many recordings of the Nocturnes over the years, in the hope of finding at least one that is the equal of Arrau's version on the Philips label, which I first heard in 1979. But I have finally had to admit defeat. This is the greatest of Arrau's many great Chopin recordings, and it never has been - and probably never will be - surpassed. The reason for this is actually quite simple. Unlike many other pianists, Arrau treats these works not as salon pieces or romantic miniatures but as timeless ... Read More

Don't buy this CD. On some cd players it sounds fine, but if you have a good-quality player you will very clearly hear someone breathing throughout the entire CD. I'm not the only reviewer who has noticed this.
