Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: Boston Baroque and Martin Pearlman recorded a splendid set of the Brandenburg Concertos on period instruments in 1993 and 1994. Made entirely in the US, these snappy, crisply articulated, and fluent performances rely heavily on the talents of violinist Daniel Stepner (who doubles as one of the two solo violists in Concerto No. 6). Among the highlights are the joyous finale to Concerto No. 4 and the superb cembalo cadenza in No. 5, played by Pearlman. Along with outstanding sound, there's a winning sense of freshness and discovery in these performances. --Ted Libbey

All of the preceding reviews linked to this item (Complete Brandenburg Concertos, Consortium Musicum) are actually reviews of the CD set by Pearlman and the Boston Baroque! There are similarities, but they are not the same.
First, an important difference: these recordings have the tempi spot-on. The Pearlman treatment is overly fast throughout.
Second, a disappointing similarity: The second movement of Concerto 3 is missing what most scholars consider an obligatory improvisation. ... Read More

Boston Baroque is a chamber group that plays these venerable Bach pieces on original instruments. The interpretations seem to strike a middle ground between sounding academic and sounding expressive. Some original instrument productions feature sound that is harsh and dry, but Telarc has captured these instruments in a warm acoustic setting that seems just right for the music. To put my thoughts on these two fine disks in a nutshell, I'd have to say that what we have here are old instruments, new sound, and ... Read More

What a joy to listen to such an articulation of Bach's Concertos! I've been looking for a good CD recording of the complete set of concertos for a couple of years searching at B&N bookstores and BMG sites, finally my wife suggested I try Amazon.com - and the purchase is complete! Thank you, Amazon, for hosting such a great variety of items!

You will be absolutely stunned to find yourself listening to this beautiful music night and day. It is very difficult to put it on pause once you've started listening to it. This is an excellent tool to instantly brighten your mood and reenergize your batteries without resorting to trendy super-caffeinated beverages or fumbling about with sticky sugary candy bars masquerading as all natural vitamin-enriched energy bars. You'll be tapping your foot, and playfully twiddling your fingers - the all natural way. ... Read More

Being my first review for Amazon I will make this brief. I found this performance to be my favorite of all the Brandenburgs I have heard, though I course there are many I have never listened to. This recording was very well done with wonderful sound and exciting performances. Highly recommended.
