When untreated, the razor sharp edges of this mined product scratch the exoskeletons of hard bodied insects, making them susceptible to fatal attack from natural organisms in the soil. Due to a new neighbor's dog being chained on the other side of our fence, we suddenly started getting fleas in our yard and house. We tried some chemical pesticides, but they weren't working. Due to pregnancy, I did not want to bomb the house or use carpet powders with chemicals. And the kids like to play in the yard, so I hesitated to cover it in chemicals, too. So, we tried this. A toxic spray I used only slowed them down enough that they were crawling out of the vacuum cleaner 2 minutes later. A gentler 'human friendly' spray was unable to even slow them down after spraying a captured bug that was still alive and walking fine after 12 hours in a cup soaked with the spray. The DE powder killed the creature in less than an hour. After 2 weeks of treating the room, these creatures have become so scarce I haven't seen one for over a week.

Reading up on diatomaceous earth everyone suggests making sure to apply it only with a protective mask. At the same time, it's often touted as "100% Safe" and "Completely Non Toxic". Bull.
It's basically microscopic particles of glass (glass dust). As soon as you open the bag it gets EVERYWHERE- it's so light and takes to the air so quickly that it might as well qualify as a gas. We keep chickens in our backyard and continually found advice for DE to control flies. We sprinkled this occasionally in the worked up earth in the chicken coop and it did the job.
The only downside to DE is that it is a fine powder similar to corn starch so can blow and stick to clothing and anything. I'm still looking for a good dispenser for it to keep the mess under control. Not something I personally would use inside w/ pets.

I'm almost to the bottom of this 10 pound bag after a few months of using it around the apartment. I got this to combat the flea issue we've been having for months. I've used it all over the carpet and furniture. When I've used the vacuum, I've put more down. Can't say it's done much for the flea problem. Roaches are all gone though! Also seems to do no harm to spiders either. This is very dusty stuff. Fine white powder on everything I own. Clogs up the central air filter as well.
